The Importance of Protecting Your AC System in the Winter

While Florida doesn’t get very cold for very long there is still winter and hopefully the weather cools off a little bit. It’s during that time though that you shouldn’t neglect your AC unit. You should still protect it even when your not using it like the way you do during the summer months.

Here are a few suggestions:

Adjust your thermostat gradually

By gradually increasing the thermostat temperature will help prevent drastic changes in the temperature of your unit. This way you will be comfortable during the days and evenings when it becomes much cooler out and perhaps even turning on the heat. You can also install a programmable thermostat so you can “set it and forget it”. This way your system works on a schedule so your house stays cool only when you are home and need it.

Don’t neglect your filter

Filters still need to be changed every 90 days, including during the winter months. That’s because a dirty filter will cause your unit to use more energy than necessary to cool your home. When your AC isn’t top of mind during the winter and holiday season that quick chore may get overlooked which can result in some surprises in your electric bill.

Utilize ceiling fans

By utilizing your ceiling fans during the winter can help distribute heat around the room. This will help take a load off your system, which otherwise may be utilized for heat.

While Florida doesn’t get a winter very often it is important to be knowledgeable and prepared for when it does come. That includes thinking about your air conditioning unit!
